急驚風不見得贏過慢郎中

由於技術進步一日千里,延緩資訊科技的投資,反而可能是縮減成本的另一利器──也可以減低公司堆滿稀奇古怪或者不久就要落伍淘汰的技術的可能性。許多公司,尤其是在1990年代,因為希望取得先手優勢,或者因為害怕落乎人後,所以搶著投資資訊科技。除了非常少數的例子,它們的希望和害怕都是空穴來風。最聰明的科技使用者──戴爾和沃爾瑪再次鶴立雞群──遠遠落在尖端趨勢之後,等到標準和最佳實務確立之後才購置。它們讓缺乏耐性的競爭對手去負擔高昂的實驗成本,然後花得少,得到的多,一舉超越它們。
